West Coast Swing (WCS) is a partner dance derived from Lindy Hop. It is characterised by a distinctive elastic look that results from its basic extension-compression technique of partner connection, and is danced primarily in a slotted area on the dance floor. The dance allows for both partners to improvise steps while dancing together. Typically the follower walks into new patterns travelling forward on counts "1" and "2" of each basic pattern, rather than rocking back. The Anchor Step is a common ending pattern of many West Coast Swing figures.

WCS 2011

Today WCS is popular not only in the United States, there are pockets of 'Westie' dancers all over Europe, from the east in Finland and Russia to the south of France and Spain. There are also groups teaching in Australia and Japan. Classes and dances as well as competitive and social events are filling up the European calendar.

The growth is largely due to the wonder of the internet which has made WCS more accessible to those that may not have been able to travel to America. That, combined with the visits of top US Pro's that travel to share knowledge and theories about the dance.

Hopefully, WCS will continue to grow here in Europe and around the globe.  With it's smooth and groovy style, to a wide range of music, we expect nothing less.
